Gearing up for Your Western Hunt: A Comprehensive Guide

When it comes to western hunting, your choice of pack can make or break your expedition. The demanding terrain, unpredictable weather, and need to pack out heavy loads require gear that's up to the challenge. Let's dive into some of the best options available for serious hunters who demand performance and reliability.

The Foundation: The EMOD System

At the core of any serious western hunting setup is a reliable frame system. The Mainframe stands out as an exceptional choice, having been tested to hold over 1,300 pounds. This ultra-rugged frame serves as the foundation for a modular system that can be configured for anything from day hunts to extended backcountry expeditions. What sets the Mainframe apart is its versatility – you can build it up for multi-day trips or strip it down when you need to go in light and come out heavy.

For the Dedicated Elk Hunter: The Team Elk Pack

Elk hunting presents unique challenges, and the Team Elk Pack was specifically designed to meet them. Its standout feature is the patented rifle-back scabbard, which keeps your weapon secure yet accessible. The pack's aluminum frame is engineered for heavy loads, while the innovative meat carrying system allows you to separate the pack from the frame – a crucial feature when packing out game from remote locations.

Beyond its practical features, purchasing this pack supports conservation through the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, making it a choice that gives back to the wildlife we pursue.

The Ultralight Options: Vapor Series

For those who count every ounce, the Vapor series offers two excellent options:

Perfect for minimalist hunters and day trips, the Vapor 2500 offers 2,800 cubic inches of space in a front-loading design. Despite its compact size, it doesn't compromise on features, offering extended depth stretch pockets for essential gear like spotting scopes and water bottles. The 450D Aramid reinforced ripstop (in camo options) ensures durability without excess weight.

The big brother to the 2500, the Vapor 5000 nearly doubles the capacity to 5,000 cubic inches. The roll-top design allows for variable capacity, while maintaining all the premium features of its smaller sibling. Both Vapor packs are compatible with the EMOD Lid system, allowing for expanded storage when needed.

Essential Accessories: The Recon Bino Harness

While not a pack per se, the Recon Modular Bino Harness deserves mention as a crucial piece of western hunting gear. Its magnetic forward-pull access ensures quick, quiet operation, while the modular design allows you to customize it to your needs. The MOLLE-compatible wings and rear panel provide options for additional storage without compromising the low-profile design.

Making Your Choice

When selecting your western hunting pack, consider these factors:
- Hunt duration: Day hunts might be well-served by the Vapor 2500 or even smaller packs like our Bandit or X2, while multi-day expeditions call for the Vapor 5000 and a fully configured Mainframe system
- Personal preference: Some hunters prefer the simplicity of an all-in-one solution like the Team Elk Pack, while others appreciate the modularity of the Mainframe system

Remember, the best pack is the one that fits your specific hunting style and needs. All these options are field-proven and capable of handling the demands of western hunting – the key is matching the right pack to your particular requirements.

Whether you're planning your first western hunt or looking to upgrade your current setup, these packs represent some of the finest options available. Each has been designed with the serious hunter in mind, incorporating features and durability that can handle the demanding conditions of western hunting while helping you bring home your harvest successfully.

Great Product

Spent 4 days over 11,000 ft Elk hunting. This pack was comfortable and evenly dispersed the weight of the pack on long 8 mile days averaging 1300' of elevation gain. Highly recommended. I have had both shoulders and left hip reconstructed and this pack was amazing.

Vapor 2500 is the perfect size

Great bag that it is going to work perfectly as my daily hunting pack. I have the Little brother pack which is similar in design to the Vapor, and I really like it but it is a little big for a day pack. Also with the EMOD Mainframe I think I have a better option for transporting quarters. I have been using the Mainframe with V1 Batwings and though that works Batwings are a little small for all my gear when I am out for an entire day. The batwings are now my daypack option when hiking with my wife. I purchased the EMOD lid to go with the Vapor and can now expand to fit any hunting trip I will go on.

And as usually the construction of the Vapor is outstanding!

How good!!

I’ve been looking for a long time for a good pack. A simple thing I thought, yet I’ve made do for so long, which has been fine, but hunting is meant to be enjoyable right? I bit the bullet and bought a mainframe and pack on sale. Went out over the weekend, was successful and started hauling meat out. The whole process was a dream. Unzipped the pack, loaded up the frame, pack back on and away. Comfortable, and secure and yes, even made the pack out enjoyable!! Veteran 4 veterans - can’t ask for more - outstanding!! Edit: I don’t get the compression straps with the clips so I’ve tied some loops onto the buckles to strap the meat in tight before putting the pack back on - works great.
