I hunt west coast elk and have always struggled between a Camelbak Mule and an 18L bag for day trips. I have found one too small and one too large. The H31 is the perfect size for a hunting day pack with enough room for everything I need if I’m caught out for a night or two. I really appreciate the side pockets can carry a canteen/cup on one side and a Phelps bugle on the other. I generally buy OD/army green gear, and was disappointed everyone was out of stock for those colors. However, I bought the mountain camo and was pleasantly surprised at the pattern and quietness of the fabric. I’m very hard on packs and notoriously overload them. Even though I’ve got this pack set up as a <10lb (w/o food/water) 3 day pack I’m sure I’ll find something heavy to throw in it.
I haven’t used it enough to tell if it’ll hold up. It would have been nice to have a few more areas to secure small items separately in the top pouch, especially a designated spot for a cell phone in the top flap, and the belt strap is a joke unless you’re using it to secure a chest pack. I don’t use a water bag, but if I did the only pass through for the hose is on the wrong side for me.
At first I was disappointed I couldn’t fit the gear I wanted in it. But I soon realized there were a few things I didn’t actually need, and after thoughtful placement and packing I can fit all I need and more for three days with room to spare.
